I can't say I'm too thrilled about this quick adoption of the iTunes rss extensions. I'm pretty devided about this whole thing - I'm really thrilled that Apple is endorsing and promoting podcasting and helping to bring it into the mainstream awareness, but on the flipside, I find it frustrating that in order to have a podcast display correctly, I need to implement itunes-specific elements into my feed. While some of these extensions are ACTUALLY extensions and therefor I understand completely, but some of these so-called "extensions" have the same namespaces and output as standard rss markup, as for title, or description, or author. And these really don't need anything iTunes specific.
Here's from geeknewscentral.com:
"At least Microsoft offered their name spaces up in creative commons. Apple did not and those of us running iTunes name spaces now are buying into their Trademark and lock in."
I couldn't agree more. Here's Dave Winer's post on the subject: http://www.reallysimplesyndication.com/2005/06/28#a682
Hey Liron! I agree with ya. That tied with no noice to the public about how Apple was doing things kind of sucked too. And I hope no one was caught off guard by them releasing "early." Most rumors said next week. All the Podshow podcasts were hit hard by huge traffic and Apple not hostiong their shows in Akamai. I'd have to say they got "iTuned!" :0
However on the flip side my Podcast (Presidential Weekly Radio Address) subscription base has more than tripled since yesterday and it shows up pretty good in the directory. (I added a picture and updated the description this afternoon to the RSS feed. I'm wondering when it will show up. ) Those podcasts that are more well known and featured by iTunes added thousands of new listeners. I think the early issues are being outweighed by the benefits. :)
BTW - I added the subscribe to iTunes link on the page today: Podcast One
All you have to do is find your show in the iTunes store and right click or control click and copy the iTunes URL to get your id. Put that on your blog or website and make it easy for visitors to subscribe.
What I really want is how to link up to iTunes via RSS URLs. That would be nice. I'm sure if will come out soon.
It looks like podcastalley.com is also adding itunes functionality to the feeds that are in their directory. Ah, well, what can ya do? :)
I don't think my podcast is in the iTunes store, you need to have an iTunes account to add a feed to their directory as far as I was told and I have no point to an account - the iTunes store doesn't work in Israel and my player doesn't do AAC anyway :)
I'm wondering why the podcast directory is in the store, anyway? It makes more sense to me that it should have it's own small directory like the radio listings in iTunes.
Hey, I'd love to see you publishing a personal podcast - you blog a lot of interesting news on the podcast shuffle frontpage and it would be great if you could transform it into a weekly podcast. What say you? I'd subscribe :)
Hey Liron - the personal podcast is in the works. ;) Been super busy as of late with the site and the PWRA podcast (and umm Formula 1 is heating up!). Thanks for the vote of confidence. I have to get up super early and get my car inspected I think I'll take along the iRiver and Griffin mic to make a few beta-casts.
As far as adding your feed. I added it for you. :) I put it in the Technology Category with a Subcategory of Computers.
