FeedBurner support for iTunes

I saw this on FeedBurner today:

Burning Questions - The Official FeedBurner Weblog: Podcasting Made Easy: FeedBurner support for iTunes, Odeo, and Yahoo Media RSS

This will be great as you will be able to still use FeedBurner and have your podcast show up correctly in iTunes!

iTunes 4.9 Released

Apple has seems to have released version 4.9 early. Most reports I read online were that early July would be the date. Click to Download

Big feature of course for us is: Podcasting

"With iTunes 4.9 you can now browse, find, sample and subscribe to thousands of free podcasts — radio shows delivered over the Internet to your computer — then sync them to your iPod and listen anytime, anywhere."

iPodder 2.1 now available!

With over 600,000 downloads its got to be the favorite podcatcher program. Its my favorite. Version 2.1 is out and has a lot of new features. Here are just a couple (too many to mention!):
  • Synch subscriptions to remote OPML file (under File -> Preferences -> Feed manager).
  • iPodder/Mac now sets iTunes grouping to 'Podcast', just like Windows.
  • Auto cleanup. Ability to specify on a per-feed basis that episodes older than N days should be auto-cleaned up.

Download it: iPodder 2.1

The Lironcast Podcast

Liron (Pronouced leer-own if you're american, or lieron if you're german...) was helping me debug some issues with the new flash player and provide some insight on how to make podcasts compatible with the limitations of Flash. (see previous blog for details). Check her first show. Its very good!

Name: The Lironcast Podcast [click to subscribe]
Category: Technology
Description: It's true - they way to the heart of a geek girl is through her comic book collection and her random copies of the hitchhiker's guide. And despite what they may show you on CNN, we have these things in Israel, too. So how does an Ex-soldier (Sgt.) take her morning coffee? Feel free to join on in and find out :)

Listen Now! and Variable Bit Rates

Just a note on the Listen Now! links. Sometimes you will encounter podcasts that sounds more like Alvin and the Chipmonks than podcasters (err - like some of my repodcasts of PWRA.... ). Here's the issue. Flash from Macromedia doesn't seem to have support for variable bit rates. Here's a snippet I found on the web:

"flash doesn't support VBR (Variable Bit Rate) MP3 files. If you play VBR MP3 files, playback will sound like a chipmunks version of your songs. The best way to encode MP3 files is to use a fixed bitrate of 64/96/128 kbps with a sample frequency of 22.05 kHz and joint stereo."

Listen Now! On Podcast Shuffle

I was listening to Scott Fletcher's PodCheck Week in Review (awesome show) and he mentioned the PupuPlayer from Pupu Platters Studios.

Its a flash player that plays Podcast Feeds. I've seen a couple out on the net before and actually tried another one out but didn't really like it. I tried the PupuPlayer and its great. I've linked up all the Podcast Shows on Podcast Shuffle to point to their FREE PupuPlayer which is ad supported. There's a custom version coming for Podcast Shuffle soon without ads. I just couldn't wait because their player is wicked!

So look out the Listen Now! links on Podcast Shuffle to listen to podcasts right here on the site. It'll help you decide on subscribing to the podcasts. BTW - Subscribing to podcasts is the easiest way to get them. Its just so automatic and easy. If you need help on that, click the Help & About link in the header. If its still not clear - send me Feedback and I'll come over and set it up for you.*

* Provided you send me 1st class air fare and a limo to and from the airport ;)

Pod Formula 1

Formula 1 is here in the USA. If you can't get enough of Forumla 1 on Speed TV (or whatever you have in your country). Check out Pod Formula 1:

Name: Pod Formula 1 [click to subscribe]
Category: Sports
Description: The original Formula 1 podcast. The inside line of F1 Racing . . . or, perhaps better described as, "the outside of any important circles/parking lot alternative view" of F1 Racing. This is what the announcers want to say but can't on TV.
Links: RSS Link | Web Site

My predictions... Kimi will take the early lead from Truli (who'll fade...). Michael Shumacher will stay out late due to carrying more fuel and will pit last of the front runners and come out ahead of KImi and Alonso. If the Michelins hold out Ferrari won't win, but if the problems surface with the Michelins (Michelin have told the FIA that they are unsure the tyres used in qualifying will be safe to race unless the speeds in the banked Turn 13 can be reduced.) look for Shumi and Rubens get to 2 spots on the podium.

Market wants more erotic podcasts

I saw this on CBS Market Watch:

By Frank Barnako, MarketWatch
Last Update: 10:48 AM ET Jun 16, 2005
WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- A business consultant says the market for "podcasting" is underserved.

While 40% of the Internet-delivered audio shows focus on music, science, technology and comedy, the most popular category for users is erotica, according to Alex Nesbitt, president of Bella Ventures Inc. "The supply is not yet meeting market demands," he wrote in a just-released analysis titled, "The Podcast Value Chain Report."

Nesbitt predicts the market for podcasting tools and services will reach $400 million, "in the near future." The business consultant also said podcasts of "enduring content" like ITConversations.com, are likely to become valuable as archives. Capturing university lectures and speeches will drive growth, he added. "Narrowly focused, but very high-value content that is similar to high-priced subscription newsletters, such as investment research, should also have strong commercial appeal," he added.

Whether podcasting pioneers like it or not, Nesbitt sees advertising becoming a factor in podcasting. But he concedes the difficulty of determining the audience size will hold back traditional approaches to marketing. "I speculate that performance-based advertising may develop into a major mechanism," he wrote.

Simple Help Page

I know a lot of people visiting the site are new to podcasting or don't even know what podcasting is. I've added some help on the About page (now called Help & About).

Do you need Help? Not sure what to do on this site?

  • Download a podcast catcher software like iPodder
  • Install that software (its free!) and come back to Podcast Shuffle and search for shows or browse categories that you are interested in.
  • Find a show that you want and click the name - I've added a small javascript popup that has the RSS URL in it in it. You copy and paste that URL into iPodder (on the subscription tab) and it will subscribe you to that show
  • Now all you have to do is sit back and relax - when ipodder pulls MP3 files from the RSS URL it will load them into iTunes for you and even create a playlist. Listen from iTunes or synch your iPod and listen to them whereever you want. :)
Thats it. There also more information on the iPodder here:
iPodder FAQ

More questions? Click the Feedback link in the header and send it to me! I'll answwer ASAP!

I hope that helps! :)

New Chub Creek!

Hey - there's a new episode of Chub Creek. You should probably be telling me this cause you're subscribed. :)

Episode 18: One thing's for sure, it's a show Dave will never live down. That's right, listen to Dave embarrass himself in about a hundred ways! Just when he thought he'd done enough himself, Gary tacked on even more, to make the whole show a well rounded, extravaganza of fun and games. Gary reveals some wicked new songs and gives us the lowdown on the latest in hard-driving technology. Gary really lets his hair down in this one and if you're a technophobe, this one's for you. Dave tells us his deep feelings about Apple and its Commander in Chief, Steve Jobs, and gets into the Intel swtich thing a little bit. This is one is out there, so come on in, don't be a switcher.

Red Bar Radio Interviews Podcast Shuffle

A couple weeks ago Mike from Red Bar Radio submitted his podcast to Podcast Shuffle and was nice enough to ask me to be on his show. Last night it all went down. The Red Bar crew were very cool to let me ramble on about Podcasting, Podcast Shuffle and other free services like Ping-O-Matic and Feedburner.

Check out the interview: RBR-06-06-2005 - my interview is up first and then they go on to talk about other stuff. Listen and then come back!

OK - so you heard the show and now you want to subscribe. I know you do. So here ya go:

Red Bar Radio - Hosts MIKE D. and RONNIE harshly judge pop-culture in this 2-HOUR, weekly talk show. RED BAR RADIO isn't like those other boring radio shows. RED BAR RADIO has been around for 2 years now, and has gained over 50,000 daily listeners! A fast-pased look at current events, entertainment, politics and everything else. See what thousands of others are listening to! Oh yeah - you'll be laughing a lot too.

Podcast Shuffle Search Widget 1.2

Version 1.2 is now live. I've integrated a totally new skin from Glitschka Studios and updated the UI. The result. A much more streamlined widget, smaller in size and mathing color scheme with the web site.

So if you have Tiger, check it out by downloading the zip archive on the dashboard page. Note if you already have version 1.0 or version 1.1 you'll have to manually replace the widget by dragging it to your widget directory.

Here's how to do that:

  1. Go to your home directory (e.g. the house on your left handside finder window)
  2. Double Click Library
  3. Double Click Widgets
  4. Drag the new widget from your desktop (or whereever you downloaded it to)
  5. open dashboard - click the podcast shuffle widget if it is open and refresh it by pressing APPLE+R
  6. If its not open (aww man!) find it in the dashboard dock.
That's it! Thanks for using the Podcast Shuffle Search Widget.

Shows With Promos

Check them out and if you are a podcaster send me the URL to your promo. (An MP3 Promo File preferably 2-5 minutes in length. I'd suggest that you name the file "promo.mp3 so that you can easily change it later on. e.g. http://www.yoursite.com/podcast/show_promo.mp3) If you have a show in the directory, just send me Feedback (tell me the name of your show please) or if your show is not in the directory ...
