Podcast One - Celebrity Bumpers

As you know last week I talked about getting some of my fellow podcasters to to intros to Podcast One - Presidential Weekly Radio Address. Paul from Barefoot Radio was gracious enough to lend his talent for this week's address.

Coming up soon will be Dave from Chub Creek and Scott Flectcher from Podcheck Weekly Review will be doing a nice ending disclaimer for me!

I'm hoping to recruit few more podcasters in the future and have plans to do a 'get out the vote' PSA later in the year (i.e. like Sept or October) to remind people to vote in the off year election.

Podcast Awards Voting Scams

Geez man - its not like there were huge prizes up for the winner, but it seems people are already trying to scam votes on the Podcast Awards site. Here's a note from their site:

We have been tracking a number of sites using scripts to try and bypass the voting process. Candidate sites are asked to have their listeners vote fairly.

I'd have to guess that given the amount of cheating done in this election makes it a fraud! Someone send in Jimmy Carter to save those podcast awards! Bummer dudes. Why can't we just all be excellent to each other!

Podshow Music Network

Also known as Podsafe Music Network. Hmm... I was just about to sign up as a podcast producer so I could "use" the podsafe music until I read "The Catch". You can do either:
  1. Saying during your show "Some of the music provided tonight from the PodShow Podsafe Music Network. Check it out at 'music.podshow.com'"
  2. Playing one of our bumpers during your show. (Coming soon!!)
Nice of them to be really clear about what they want. However, here's my clever workaround... Go to to the new podsafe site. Find Music you want and them contact the band yourself if you still need to get permission. Cut out the middleman (i.e. PodShow). Sounds like a plan to me. At any rate if you have a good show with more than a few listeners bands are probably jammming your email box with MP3 files already.

Here's a novel podcasting idea. Ring up Mark from the TartanPodcast. He gets way too many songs from what I heard him say on his show. Have him send all the B-List songs that didn't impress him as much as the ones that he plays. Call it the Tartan B-Side Podcast. As long as you have a Scottish accent you'll pull it off ... maybe. :)

South Park Studio

I had seen some cool South Park Avatars the web but wasn't too sure where they came from. However today I just happened upon a page that had a link to South Park Studio so I made one for myself.

PodCheck Sponsorship 13.5 cents/listener

Hmm... I checked out the new (is it new?) iPodVerts that Scott Fletcher mentioned on his latest show. Here's his auction item:

The Podcheck Weekly Review is a weekly podcast offering news and commentary on the week's events in the podcasting world. The show is a must-listen-to podcast producers. The show boasts an international audience of over 600, consisting of podcast producers and hobbyists from around the world. They are typically upper-to-middle class, well educated, attractive, and smell GREAT!

The opening bid is $325 which means you could have a month of Podcheck Weekly Review sponsorship (hmm is that 4 shows or 3?) for the low low price of 13.5 cents per user. While more expensive than the $10 per show he was offering. Still sounds like a bargain. The only hard thing to believe is that Scott only has 600 listeners.

Hey Scott - what if I only want a few of your Icelandic listeners. Can't you use that Podcaching technology you mentioned to geo-target just them for me? (PodCheck Weekly Review)

Podcast One - Featured On Apple

If you have paid close attention to Podcast Shuffle, you might have noticed that I also do another podcast called Podcast One which is a "re-podcast" of the weekly radio address that the President does as well as a few short clips that I also find on the White House web site. Its purely a public service that I started doing to get my feet wet with podcasting.

In order to spread the word I created a widget and now its the FEATURED WIDGET!!! Yeah! [Screen Shot] on Apple. Wow. Cool. Thanks Dashboard Team! Uhh... good thing I upgraded my servers last month! :)

You can download on Apple: Podcast One - Dashboard - Radio & Podcasts or here on Podcast Shuffle Podcast One Widget

PS: (Dear White House Radio staff - anytime you want me to come down and show you how to do this podcast you can let me know. I know you'd do a better job at it than me. Check your email box for an email from me.)

iTunes One Click (Mac OS)

To support podcasters and make it easier to listeners, I've added a link on the details pages that opens up iTunes and subscribes to your show. Check out the "iTunes One Click (Mac OS)" links when you are checking out podcasts. Its the easiest way to get a podcast into your subscription list in iTunes. Here's an example using my show:

Name: Podcast Shuffle Show [click to subscribe in iTunes (Mac OS)]
Category: Podcast Reviews
Description: Based on the web site PodcastShuffle.com, each episode I review clips and add commentary to the best podcasts in iTunes.
Links: iTunes One Click (Mac OS) | RSS Link | Web Site | Listen Now!

If you don't use iTunes just control click on the RSS Feed link and copy that URL into whatever software you use (right click for PC users). Note that the pcast:// links don't work on Windows machines. I'll be trying to add the .pcast files that the Windows verison of iTunes supports as soon as possible.

!@#$% Be #1 in iTunes Alpha Listings

Do you want to know how to be #1 in the in iTunes alpha listings and jump to the head of the list and push everyone else down so that YOUR podcast is the numero uno? Here's how.
  1. Open your favorite XML editor
  2. Find the TITLE element
  3. Add a dash or quote or slash before the letters in your show
  4. Wait for Apple to suck in your feed again!
  5. Brace yourself for new subscribers!
Note if you really want to be high in the list add two slashes or two quotes and be prepared to add more as others add slashes and dots and other characters to push you down! Also note, you don't have to say the slash or dot or quote on air. Its not required since podcasts are not governed by FCC regulation

* Note this "How To" is full of sarcasm in case you missed it. I don't recommend doing this and I'm not going to publish a list of lame because I could be wrong and some of the show names could be legit. You can go into iTunes (mainly the Audio Blogs category) for yourself and see some of the new titles and get an idea of who is doing this. :(

Happy Fourth Of July

Happy Fourth of July everyone! A few weeks ago a younfg lady named Brin sent in her podcast. Its a show where she promotes her self as a recording artist. She's only 13 but I think if you listen to her you'll realize that she's really good. I asked her to send me a few songs for the 4th and she delivered! (yea!)

Bitz of Brin - 3 July 2005 - Totally Podsafe. Feel free to use my songs or my promo. I sing America the Beautiful and Amazing Grace. Bitz of Brin - Podcast #10 - Podsafe and Patriotic!

Check out her site for more songs: Bitz of Brin

One Click Subscribe - iTunes

I realized the other day you could right or control click in iTunes to get your Podcast URL to link to it (i.e. a phobos URL). For example for Podcast Shuffle Show:

What I wanted to do on Podcast Shuffle was automatically link up all the podcasts to iTunes at launch but could never find a URL format. Well here it is PCAST!

A few folks have written up easy to create pcast links and files so that it is real easy to transfer a web visitor to their itunes. Here's a synoposis:

For Mac users, use pcast:// instead of http://

example: Subscribe to the Podcast Shuffle Show in iTunes (Mac)

For windows you apparently need to make a XML files and name it .pcast

example from pasta.cantbedone.org:

Serving Mac browsers (Safari and Firefox tested):

1. Use the pcast: protocol to form your feed URL:
pcast://del.icio.us/rss/gu.st/log%2Bsystem:media:audio
2. Done.

Serving Windows browsers (IE and Firefox tested):

1. Create a .pcast XML file:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE pcast PUBLIC "-//Apple Computer//DTD PCAST 1.0//EN" "http://www.itunes.com/DTDs/pcast-1.0.dtd">
<pcast version="1.0">
<channel>
<link rel="feed" type="application/rss+xml" href="http://del.icio.us/rss/gu.st/log%2Bsystem:media:audio" />
<title>gu.st</title>
<category>Blog</category>
<subtitle>Me. And others.</subtitle>
</channel>
</pcast>

2. Set Content-Type to "application/octet-stream"
3. If your file does not end in .pcast, be sure to set the Content-Disposition to "attachment; filename=whatever.pcast"

Example:
Subscribe to the Podcast Shuffle Show in iTunes (PC) ----
I need to update the Podcast Shuffle database now to create those links. ;)

Non-US Podcasters Not in iTunes :(

Liron from Lironcast Podcast pointed out to me that her show was not in the iTunes directory and she didn't have any way of adding it because ITMS didn't work in Israel.

I don't think my podcast is in the iTunes store, you need to have an iTunes account to add a feed to their directory as far as I was told and I have no point to an account - the iTunes store doesn't work in Israel and my player doesn't do AAC anyway :)

Now I have seen a lot of international podcasts in iTunes, but if you're in the same boat - click the Feedback link. I'll add your show for you. Just give me your Feed URL and the Category that your podcast belongs in. I'll do my best to help you out. Also - if your show is not already in Podcast Shuffle, click the Add A Podcast link as well and I'll add it to the directory so that web surfers will easily find your show as well.

Seven New FeedBurner Features

WOW! Cool new Feedburner features and a Tiger Widget:
  • Ping Page
  • Geotag Your Feed
  • Title/Description Burner
  • FeedMedic
  • Javascript Circulation Ticker
  • ImageCast
  • StatsTracker Dashboard Widget
My favorites - the Widget (of course) and Geotag. I can imagine seeing a map of all the podcasts in Podcast shuffle on a map of the world. That would be neat.

Check Out the Full Details: Seven New FeedBurner Features

Recent Shows Feature

I found a PHP script from FeedsForAll that has made it pretty easy to pull in the podcast feeds and display the most recent (last ten) shows on the podcast details pages. There are a couple bugs where non-enclosure links show up for some reason. I thought I woiuld try it out and see how it worked. You will see it on the bottom of any podcast detials page (e.g. Verge of the Fringe. I'd say I'm about 75% there. Have to figure out what the deal is with parsing some of the feeds and how to strip out HTML from the descriptions.

If anyone is familiar with PHP and has a pointer - let me know. ;) [click Feedback or just leave a comment here on this post.]

Happy Canada Day!

Happy Canada Day! and check out some Canadian Podcasts and celebrate along. :)
